ZIP codes were developed around the 1960’s by the United States Postal Service. Due to a large influx of mail from the economy, the USPS decided to create a coding system that would make it easier to sort in the delivery process.
The number reads from left to right and becomes more specific from left to right. The first three digits refer to a large area ranging from the size of a city to a large sectional center. The last two refer to a specific post office delivery area.
As the world continues to grow, we see constant additions and shifts to ZIP code information. In 1983, the USPS developed a nine (9) digit code called ZIP +4 which takes the existing 5-digit ZIP code and makes it even more specific.
